Tech progress only through industry-institute synergy
Express News Service Bangalore, Nov 07:Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy said on Sunday that technological advances in the country were possible only through increased interaction between industries and technical institutes. Speaking at the seminar "VTU-Industry Initiatives' örganised by VTU along with Diamant Metallplastic, Germany and Diamant Triumph Metallplastic, Bangalore, Reddy said that the industry-institute synergy would have two-fold advantages. Not only would it make the academic Community more conversant in emerging trends in science and technology but it would also increase the talent pool available to meet industry require-ments. Reddy spoke about the Indo-German Institute of Technology. (IGIT) that was launched on Saturday, calling it a common plat-form for addressing industry needs and examining institutes' potential to fulfill these needs. He rued that although the IT sector had developed in leaps and bounds, the same could not be said of conventional sectors like materials and manufacturing. IGIT had been set up with a view to remedy this problem, he explained, as it particularly dealt with issues pertaining to manufacturing, friction and lubrication needs of the industry.Reddy also discussed other initiatives taken by VTU in Joint ventures with wellknown industries. VTU had recently introduced a six-month training Programme for students on highway technology, in partnership with IngersollRand, he said. He also mentioned VTU's tie-ups with Microsoft, IBM and Cisco. S. Mohan, Chairman, Society for Innovation and Development, IISc and B.S.
